Instant Lawn Near Me – Where To Shop It & How To Choose It

South Africa, for the most part, enjoys a subtropical climate. For those who don’t know – this means hot and humid summers (sorry, no white Christmas for us).

Generally, it is windy all year round and the winters are milder than those experienced in other parts of the world. If it is a particularly cold winter, there are very few regions that actually see snow. Winters also tend to be dry, with rain normally kicking in, in the summer months (November – March). South Africa can be considered quite a dry country, with an average annual rainfall of only +/-464 mm.

It is safe to say that life in South Africa is on the warmer side. When choosing a grass to grow in this climate, it is important to consider each species characteristics to determine how they will cope with the temperatures, humidity and expected rainfall. Some popular choices for us in the Southern Hemisphere include; Kikuyu, Cynodon, Buffalo and Berea Richmond.

Our Farm

At Oribi Instant Lawns, we have been in the game for over 20 years, with deep roots in East London and the surrounding communities. Our 35 hectare, lawn farm supplies 4 grass varieties, each well-suited to survive the South African climate.

Types Of Grass

Kikuyu Grass

A tropical grass, native to the East African highlands. Kikuyu grass is evergreen, meaning that it maintains a beautiful green colour throughout the year. Unlike other grass varieties, which are either warm-season or cool-season grasses.

Fast growing, lush and green, it holds up beautifully in the sun and heat and is a popular choice for homeowners, commercial properties and even grazing pastures.

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass, commonly known as Cynodon or Scutch grass, is a short-growing, warm-season grass that is popular around the world. This grass is an excellent choice for dry areas and climates.

It can be used for commercial and residential gardens, sports fields, golf courses and heavy grazing pastures.

Buffalo Grass

If erosion is a main concern of your property, consider Buffalo grass. It’s deep running root system helps keep soil together. Although Buffalo grass goes dormant in winter, it is one of the more hardy warm-season grasses.

It is a great all  rounder for residential and commercial lawns, that is hardy and low maintenance. It is important to note that this grass does not like shade, so consider your property carefully.

Berea/Richmond Grass

Berea grass, also known as LM grass, is commonly found in most east African regions. It is very dense with a beautiful dark green colour, and unlike other varieties can perform well in both shade and sun.

This grass can be described as low-maintenance and drought tolerant, with proper care it will perform very well in your gardens.
