Affectionately named Kikuyu grass, sharing a home with the Kikuyu people, this grass is native to the East African highlands.
This tropical grass is a popular choice for lawns, as it holds up well in most regions and offers many benefits.
It is famous for its fast growth and lush, green appearance. Kikuyu also makes a great pasture grass, its fast growth rate makes it great for continual grazing.
Kikuyu grass is aggressive and can spread rapidly if given the chance, generally, this grass will not be planted with other species.
It is hardy and used to hot conditions. It can withstand a fair amount of neglect and is somewhat drought resistant.
Cold weather and winter is not too devastating to your new grass, however, Kikuyu performs best in the warmer months of summer.
If you need an erosion control solution, Kikuyu is a great option, as it establishes fairly quickly. It is mat-forming with a deep root system, which helps to stabilise the soil.

Water
When establishing your new lawn, it is important to water it at least 2 times per day in the first 2 weeks. Established Kikuyu lawns don’t require too much water, every 8-10 days will suffice.
What to expect in winter
If you have a Kikuyu grass lawn, it is important to remember that your grass will go dormant during the winter months. This means poor and slow growth. It will return to its lush, green, aggressive self in the warmer months, don’t you worry.
What to expect in summer
Sun is Kikuyu’s best friend, this grass thrives in full sunlight and grows rapidly if the conditions are right. Summer maintenance is more frequent than winter maintenance.
